2010 Agenda

Take part in ISN's 50th anniversary celebrations

The main highlight of the anniversary activities will be the ISN 50 Years Panel Discussions. ISN leaders will focus on the evolution of  nephrology, the disparities of kidney care provision across developed and developing countries, and the role that the ISN has played in the last 50 years, and is prepared to play in the future. The event will be disseminated by webcast through the websites of ISN's affiliated societies of nephrology.

To celebrate 50 years of achievements, ISN will also be present at congresses across the globe.

These include:

  • ISN Nexus Symposium:  April 15-18, 2010, Kyoto, Japan
  • Forefronts: May 6-9, 2010, Kursaal Rantum, Sylt, Germany
  • 15th International Congress on Nutrition and Metabolism (ICRNM): May 25-28, 2010, Lausanne, Switzerland
  • The British Renal Society and Renal Association Conference: May 17-20, 2010, Manchester, UK
  • Asian Pacific Congress of Nephrology: June 5-8, 2010, Seoul, Korea
  • ERA-EDTA Congress: June 25-28, 2010, Munich, Germany
  • ISN Nexus Symposium: June 30 - July 2, 2010, Geneva, Switzerland
  • ASN Renal Week: November 16-21, 2010, Denver, USA

Program

  • 12:30 – 13:00 - A 50-year Perspective on the Science of Nephrology: Advances, Milestones, Challenges
- Renal science: bedside to bench and back to bedside
- Population science: the achievements of renal epidemiology
- Treatment evidence: clinical trials, challenges of global applicability
  • 13:00 – 13:15 - Turning the World Around: ISN 50 Years Film - A Worldwide Premiere
Kidney disease is a worldwide challenge. One that respects no boundaries, and offers no compromise to the disadvantaged, neglected, or suffering. There is an enormous gap between the affluent and economically disadvantaged nations of the world in terms of availability of research, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of kidney disease.

Most people associate kidney disease with dialysis and transplantation – life-saving treatments for those who have lost all kidney function. But few are aware that more than ten percent of the population has chronic kidney disease. This ten percent is at high risk of heart attacks or strokes, the most common causes of premature death in the world. And in the world’s less favoured regions, the situation is made worse by lack of medical training.

This film, commissioned by ISN for its 50th anniversary, highlights a few of the visionary leaders who have worked during the last half century to advance nephrology in the world and who have contributed to ISN achievements.
  • 13:15 – 13:45 - ISN in the Developing World: Improving Patient Care, Bridging Gaps, Providing Education
- Current disparities in kidney disease care: what is achievable? what is appropriate?
- Transferring best practice, accessible science and appropriate education around the world
- ISN future plans: the role of nephrology societies worldwide

  • 13:45 – 14:00 - Closing Remarks

Nexus_Kyoto

ISN Nexus Symposium: Kidney and Vascular System: Emerging Culprits in Pathogenesis and Advances in Therapy

April 15-18, 2010, Kyoto, Japan

This symposium will focus on the kidney and the vascular system, looking at vascular calcification, injury, regeneration, ageing and senescence among several other topics. A key goal for the meeting will be to facilitate collaborative interactions between researchers and clinicians focused on prediction, prevention, and treatment of Chronic Kidney Disease and/or Cardio Vascular Diseases.

To further promote the communications between distinguished scientists, clinicians and young nephrologists, a  new session format has been introduced called the "Meet the Professor Breakfasts". These sessions will be roundtable-style discussions focusing on vascular calcification as well as oxygen biology and cardio-renal connection.

Forefronts

Forefronts: Induction and Resolution of Renal Inflammation

May 6-9, 2010, Kursaal Rantum, Sylt, Germany

This ISN Forefronts Symposium will gather high level researchers and nephrologists around the following issues:

- Innate Immune response: the classical players
- Resolution of inflammation
- Mediators of Inflammation
- Innate Immune response: new cellular players
- Adaptive Immune response: T Lymphocytes
- Adaptive Immune response: B Lymphocytes
- New concepts in renal autoimmune disease

ISN Forefronts Symposia focus on emerging and ground-breaking research. They gather nephrologists and active investigators from other fields to stimulate exposure to new scientific domains and review the latest developments in kidney disease. Using an interactive format, they also allow nephrologists to develop a collegial relationship with leading researchers from other disciplines.
